youth climate advocates participation at COP27

There is now a UN climate summit, COP27, happening in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. For the first time, COP will have a Youth Envoy, Omnia El Omrani, who will help to make sure that youth climate advocates are heard at COP27. young people will also have their own pavilion, where they can run events at COP. I think it’s absolutely great that nowadays more and more world leaders take their time to listen to what young people and children have to say about our planet. It’s especially important that youth is heard because it’s them who will live in the future world that adults are creating right now. Because young people will be the ones facing the consequences of climate change they want to do anything they can to reduce the numer of those consequences as much as possible. Unfortunately, since they’re underage they can appeal for a change but are unable to make it so it’s really important that their voice is starting to have a meaning for the world leaders who can make that c...

The collapse of a bridge in Gurajat

On October 30 at around 6:30 local time a bridge in Morbi in Gujarat has collapsed. The bridge snapped in two which lead to the death of 135 people who either drowned in the river or were fatally injured after falling on to the stones below. There is no evidence that the company which was responsible for the earlier renovations has any experience in bridge repairs. Therefore there are allegations that corruption is to blame for the tragic accident. I think it’s unbelievably heartbreaking and unfair that all those people have lost their lives most likely because the government preferred to make a choice that is best for them and not for the citizens who they’re responsible for in a certain way. Politicians should be protecting people and acting in their favour and not exposing them to potential risks and hence possible injuries and even death. source: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/nov/01/gujarat-bridge-collapse-anger-grows-in-india-over-cover-up-c...

The transfer of Ukrainian children to Russia

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February, Russian authorities have announced the transfer of thousands of Ukrainian children to Russia to be adopted and become citizens. After multiple bombings many children who come from group homes and boarding schools followed neighbors or strangers seeking safety in central Ukraine. However, at checkpoints around the city they have been put on buses headed into Russian-held territory by the authorities. I think what Russia is doing is really terrible. The russian government is trying to get citizens by transferring children, who are not really able to consent, to their own country. Additionally, not all of those children are orphans – some have relatives or guardians who want them back. The government is using those children to portray Russia as a charitable savior. Moreover, they have made it clear that their goal is to replace the attachment to Ukraine with a love for Russia which is purely evil. source: https:...

Iran protests

It has been 10 nights of protests that are now going on in Iran. On Septemebr 16 a 22-year-old woman – Mahsa Amini – have fallen victim to police brutality. She was detained because she didn’t wear a hijab properly. The protests are becoming more and more extreme each day. At least 41 people have died since the beginning of protesting, mostly civilians but also security forces.  In my opinion poeple are rightfully protesting. It has come to a point where someone can lose their life for simply existing without hurting anyone. It is so unfair that some people think they can hurt another human being just because they don’t like something about them. We as a society has grown tired of inequality and all the suffering that is happening in the world so naturally we’re now trying to do something about it. If there’s even a tiny chance that it’ll make a difference then i think it’s a right thing to do and we should keep on doing that. source: https://www.theguardian.com...

Social media activism

Social media activism is a term for activism that uses social media platforms to provide awereness, information and education about social or political movements. Although critics debate whether it is an effective form of engagement, it is udeniably one of the most accessible forms of social or political participation. Since it doesn’t require in person involvement much more people can get included. In 2011 activists across North Africa and the Middle East involved in the „Arab Spring” decided to spread awereness about oppressive regimes and low standards of living they were experiencing. They shared information, photos and videos on social media sites where they gained millions of views and brought the issues into the global discussion. Other movements that caught hold in global conversation due to their presence in social media are: Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street, #MeToo, #LoveWins.   source: https://online.maryville.edu/blog/a-guide-to-social-medi...

How social media puts you out to identity theft?

Millions of people experience online identity theft every year. Mostly it comes from the lack of knowledge on how to protect your identity or the lack of awareness of the danger that is connected with social media sites. Personalized, targeted advertisements on social media sites  are all based on personal information people give out to the platforms when signing up. These platforms are highly at risk of cyber attacks which puts you out to identity theft. Many people not realize how much important information they carelessly hand out to social media sites and potentially to a criminal that will use it against you. It has become so usual and normal to us to provide personal data like our full name, date of birth, relationship status, interest or home town on our profiles that we forgot to notice how dangerous it can be. It is important to know how to properly use social media when there is our privacy and security at stake.   source: https://www.e...

Social media influence on buying

Social media has become one of the main factors that influences people to buy. With more that 3 billion social media users who usually have several social media accounts it is no secret that brands all over the world will try to take advantage of that. There are several tactics which trick us to buying more. For example, hiring a well-known influencer to advertise a new product can provide almost immediate rise in sales of a brand. Another, similar thing is that when we see someone else spending money – no matter if it’s someone we know or not - we feel the need to do that too. Moreover, social media collects insane amount of personal data about people which allows companies to choose most relevant ads for every social media user. That paired with the fact that nowadays we can purchase something with just a few clicks creates a perfect way to make people buy more. Chasing the unrealistic version of life, poor mental health and wanting to impress others are als...
