The beginning of social media

 There are two main opinions as to when the creation of social media occured. One of them states that it began with the invention of telegraph in 19th century since it was the first form of communication that used electricity. However, considering that telegrams did not take place „online” they cannot be the actual start of social media. The real history begins in the 1980s and ‘90s when computers became more available to general public. First communication services such as CompuServe or Prodigy which enabled digital communication through email and real-time chatting leaded to introduction of earliest social media sites: SixDegrees in 1997 and Friendster in 2002. They allowed users to sign up with their eamil adress, make individual profiles and add friends to their network. At the end of 2002 people were introduced to LinkedIn along with MySpace(2003), Facebook(2004), Twitter(2006) and a few years later Instagram(2010) and Snapchat(2011).

      Conspiracy theories are so popular because of our fears. For instance, there is a conspiracy theory that claims climate change is in fact not real and the concept of it was created for financial purposes. The reason why people believe in this theory is because the thought of climate changes that will eventually lead to a disaster of us and our planet is terrifying. We rather live in denial, thinking climate change doesn't exist than face it and try to fight it. Other very popular conspiracy theory is that people shouldn't get the covid vaccine because it contains a chip that will allow the government to control us. This theory exists because people were so afraid to get vaccinated that they created an excuse so they don't have to do it. Concluding, conspiracy theories are very popular because they're a way for us to avoid doing things that scare us.

How social media puts you out to identity theft?

       Millions of people experience online identity theft every year. Mostly it comes from the lack of knowledge on how to protect your identity or the lack of awareness of the danger that is connected with social media sites. Personalized, targeted advertisements on social media sites  are all based on personal information people give out to the platforms when signing up. These platforms are highly at risk of cyber attacks which puts you out to identity theft. Many people not realize how much important information they carelessly hand out to social media sites and potentially to a criminal that will use it against you. It has become so usual and normal to us to provide personal data like our full name, date of birth, relationship status, interest or home town on our profiles that we forgot to notice how dangerous it can be. Iran protests

     It has been 10 nights of protests that are now going on in Iran. On Septemebr 16 a 22-year-old woman – Mahsa Amini – have fallen victim to police brutality. She was detained because she didn’t wear a hijab properly. The protests are becoming more and more extreme each day. At least 41 people have died since the beginning of protesting, mostly civilians but also security forces.  In my opinion poeple are rightfully protesting. It has come to a point where someone can lose their life for simply existing without hurting anyone. It is so unfair that some people think they can hurt another human being just because they don’t like something about them. We as a society has grown tired of inequality and all the suffering that is happening in the world so naturally we’re now trying to do something about it.
