Social media activism

Social media activism is a term for activism that uses social media platforms to provide awereness, information and education about social or political movements. Although critics debate whether it is an effective form of engagement, it is udeniably one of the most accessible forms of social or political participation. Since it doesn’t require in person involvement much more people can get included. In 2011 activists across North Africa and the Middle East involved in the „Arab Spring” decided to spread awereness about oppressive regimes and low standards of living they were experiencing. They shared information, photos and videos on social media sites where they gained millions of views and brought the issues into the global discussion. Other movements that caught hold in global conversation due to their presence in social media are: Black Lives Matter, Occupy Wall Street, #MeToo, #LoveWins.
